Choose a small surface with room for a meaningful object and a little open space. Add texture with a cloth or a ceramic dish. If you use a candle or incense, use a heat-resistant holder on a stable, clear surface, with ventilation; never leave it unattended. A flameless candle is a lovely smoke-free alternative.
